Bulgaria in the Balkans is not the first place that many UK tourists have at the top of their lists, but it has many hidden treasures that are begging to be explored and a history that no other European country can match. Plovdiv in central Bulgaria is widely considered to be the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe with people first settling the city as far back as 6000 BC. Sofia, the capital, boasts a similarly impressive history dating back 7,000 years
With such a long history, Bulgaria has been shaped by many different influences over time, the Thracians, ancient Greeks, Scythians, Celts, Romans and Bulgars have all shaped the country that we see today and it is these influences which make it such an interesting country to visit for overseas travellers.
The natural world also plays a major role in Bulgaria’s appeal as a tourist destination, the Danube (Europe’s second longest river) flows along the border of Bulgaria and Romania. The Black Sea runs along the entire length of Bulgaria’s east coast and is home to some wonderful beach resorts such as Varna and Nessebar. Plus there are the Balkan mountains which run from west to east through the entire country, practically bisecting it. The Balkan mountains offer fantastic, low cost ski holidays particularly good for families and those just starting to learn.
Bulgaria is a wonderfully diverse country and one where you can have a different experience depending upon where and when you travel. However, remember that when you do make your way to the Balkans to take out travel insurance to get the protection for unforeseen issues.
